Crispus Attucks
Shout out to Crispus Attucks—first person killed in the American Revolution.
On March 5, 1770, during an angry protest by American colonists over unfair tax regulations levied against them by the British Parliament, you were shot and killed by British troops. Labeled the Boston Massacre, this event commenced the Revolutionary War that was fought five years later.
Born of Black and Native American ancestry, you are widely recognized as the first to die for our country’s independence. Your death facilitated our country’s fight against imperial authority despite Africans and African Americans remaining enslaved for nearly 100 more years.
