Kizzmekia Corbett
Shout out to Kizzmekia Corbett, PhD—viral immunologist.
Your groundbreaking labor led the charge for the creation of the Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. You assisted with product design and implementation. Furthermore, you helped develop clinical testing trials for monoclonal antibodies.
Because of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the distrust of medicine by communities of color is pervasive. However, every day you are persistently working to combat vaccine skepticism within these communities; and I’d like to put you on notice that I’ve noticed your efforts.
Following the footsteps of trailblazers such as Ellamae Simmons, M.D. (1918-2019)—the first Black woman immunologist—you’ve demonstrated an unrivaled global importance to humanity. Because of Black pioneers like you, I trust science. I mask, I’m vaxxed, I’m boosted, and I’m blessed.
Thank you for your correspondence and subsequent approval to give you your flowers by writing this tribute. Your research is helping to end the worst respiratory disease to impact the world in over a century.
