Fred Shuttlesworth
Shout out to Rev. Fred Lee Shuttlesworth (1922-2011)
A man of the cloth, you disseminated pearls of wisdom with your most impactful being, “always forgive.” You led by example and walked in this principle every day of your life despite the betrayal of moral eunuchs who made multiple attempts on your life. You learned firsthand that racism was more harrowingly true than anyone could have imagined.
Disappointment is a misalignment of expectations and reality. In your hopes for democracy, you were repeatedly met by disappointment. However, you managed your discontent and kept fighting for racial equality, setting an example for your children and grandchildren. Within the national sovereignty of America, you fought for social stability and the fair treatment of all men and women; and whenever you got knocked down, you got back up again and kept fighting.
Alongside of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists, you co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). You endured three church bombings in the 1950s and also survived a mob of Klansman who attacked you with chains and brass knuckles and stabbed your wife. After you drove yourself and your wife to the hospital, you told your kids to always forgive.
Thank you for never giving up.
